Lumbar Disc Herniation

Symptoms Can Include:

  • Pain that is continues or sporadic in the lower back region
  • Lower back muscle spasms
  • Sciatica – tingling, numbing or pain down a leg
  • Changes in bladder or bowel function
  • Muscle weakness in the leg

Relationship to Body Structure and Behavior:
Upon landing of a step or lifting of a heavy object, proper engagement of ES and Psoas muscles are important for optimal spread of force. Extension of Head/neck will induce lengthening of the effective torque of upper body lever over the hip joint.  Once the torque is sufficient, then the upper body lever will pull the hip joint forward (hip extension). Intervertebral disc(s) will break if the torque energy is not spread over the entire body. This is the reason for doing squat lifting over stoop lifting.

Suggestions for Prevention:
Avoid stoop lifting.
Arm swing while walking.
Bending the knees will help spread the force through the entire body.
